Almost 9 million square metres started
Final figures show that building of 8 942 000 m2 of utility floor space were started during 2008. This is a decrease of 1 107 000 m2 from 2007. Fewer small and medium-sized dwellings have been constructed.
In 2008, 3 341 000 m2 of utility floor space were started for residential purposes, and 5 601 000 m2 for purposes other than residential. A total of 63 per cent of the building starts for dwellings in 2008 were in multi-residential buildings, while 34 per cent were in single flats.
Fewer small and medium-sized dwellings
Dwellings with 50-79 m2 of utility floor space are still the most common. However, there appears to have been a shift from 2007 to 2008, with fewer building starts for small and medium-sized dwellings, while figures for larger dwellings seem more or less unchanged.
Decline continues in urban areas
The decrease in building activity continues, mainly driven by the decrease in the number of building starts for residential purposes in the most populated municipalities. A major part of the surrounding municipalities did however still register a small increase in the number of building starts. A total of 210 municipalities had growth or zero growth in building starts, measured in utility floor space for dwellings.
Less new area in industry
Started utility floor space for purposes other than dwelling fell 7 per cent from 2007 to 2008, from a high level of 6 024 000 m2 in 2007. The decrease is mainly due to fewer building starts within the agricultural sector and transport sector. Building starts for agricultural buildings fell by 46 per cent, from 622 000 m2 in 2007 to 335 000 in 2008. Building activity within the transport sector fell by 56 per cent, from a high level in 2007, from 436 000 m2 in 2007 to 190 000 m2 in 2008.
Fewer new chalets
Utility floor space for purposes other than dwelling also fell for holiday homes and others, after several years with an increase in building starts. A total of 5 164 new holiday homes were however completed in 2008, more than any time previously. This could indicate that building activity within the leisure homes sector is about to flatten out.
Conversion to new property registerAs of 5 November 2008, the municipalities will be transferred in groups from the Ground Parcel, Address and Building Register (GAB) to the new property register, Matrikkelen. All municipalities will be transferred by the end of February 2009. In connection with the conversion, there may be some delay in the registration of the municipalities that are being transferred. The Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority has an overview of transfer dates for each municipality . |
