New industrial buildings down 41 per cent

Number of dwellings started. Unadjusted and trend. January 1995-November 2008

Started non-residential utility floor space. Unadjusted and trend. January 1995-November 2008

A 41.1 per cent decrease was registered in November for industrial and public sector buildings compared with the corresponding period last year. Preliminary figures for utility floor space started for industrial and public sector buildings were 2.5 per cent lower in the first eleven months of 2008 than the same period in 2007. A 10.7 per cent fall in utility floor space started was correspondingly registered overall.

The decrease is also strong for the category “Holiday property, private garages etc”. Preliminary figures show a 36.7 decrease compared with November 2007. Holiday properties etc. fell 12.9 per cent in the period January-November 2008 compared with the previous year.

In the period January-November 2008, the municipalities registered 23.5 per cent fewer dwellings started during the first eleven months of 2008 compared with the same period last year. A decrease was registered in all counties except Aust-Agder, Nord-Trøndelag and Nordland. The greatest decrease was in Troms and Oppland county, with 69.3 and 65.4 per cent respectively.

Increasing delay in the registration of building starts

The average monthly registration delay for buildings started increased last year. This means that a larger share of older building projects are registered as started in the Ground Parcel, Address and Building Register (GAB). The decreasing trend may therefore be greater than indicated in the building statistics. In addition, projects that have been registered as started may have been postponed for an indefinite period due to fall in demand.

Conversion to a new property register

As of 5 November 2007, the municipalities will be transferred in groups from the Ground Parcel, Address and Building Register (GAB) to the new property register, Matrikkelen. All municipalities will be transferred by the end of February 2009. During the conversion, some delays may occur in the registration of the municipalities that are being transferred. The Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority has an overview of transfer dates for each municipality .
