Strong decrease in new multi-dwelling buildings

In the first three quarters of this year the number of dwellings started in blocks and in row houses and houses with three or four dwellings decreased by 37 per cent and 28 per cent respectively.

On the other hand, the number of dwelling started in detached houses increased by 9 per cent from a low level last year. In total, dwelling-starts fell with 21 per cent compared with the first 9 months of 2007.

More business and public buildings

During the first nine month of 2008, the utility floor space for industrial, business and public buildings increased by 7 per cent from a high level in the same period last year.

The construction of huts is up

Construction of holiday houses is still at a record high level. During the last three quarters there has been started 480 000 square metres of utility floor space for huts. This is 7 per cent above the level in 2007.

Increasing delay in the registration of building starts

The average monthly registration delay for buildings started increased last year. This means that a larger share of older building projects are registered as started in the Ground Parcel, Address and Building Register (GAB). The decreasing trend could therefore be underestimated.

Preliminary figures

The figures that are presented in the monthly building statistics is preliminary, and the sum of the three months in a quarter can deviate from the quarterly building statistics. This is because there may be corrections in the Ground Parcel, Address and Building Register (GAB).

Conversion to new property register

As of 5 November 2007 the municipalities will be transferred in groups from the Ground Parcel, Address and Building Register (GAB) to the new property register, Matrikkelen. All municipalities will be transferred by the end of February 2009. In connection with the conversion there may be some delay in the registration of the municipalities that are being transferred. The Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority has an overview of transfer dates for each municipality .
