Most floor space was started for wholesale and retail trade with 282 200 square metres, a decrease of 3.0 per cent from the corresponding period in 2007. 268 400 square metres was started for manufacturing purposes during the first three months of 2008. This is a 56.2 per cent increase from last year.

Slight decrease in the total building activity

A total of 2.4 million square metres of utility floor space was started during the January to March period. Despite the increased level of building starts for industrial purposes, this is a 2 per cent decrease from 2007. The cause was a significant decrease in dwelling starts. During the first three months of this year, 6 346 dwellings were started, down by 23.2 per cent from the corresponding period in 2007. Started floor space for dwellings fell by 18.6 per cent to 837 300 square metres.

Utility floor space started for holiday houses and residential garages during this period was 347 800 square metres, up 2.7 per cent compared with January to March 2007.

Easter makes comparisons difficult

Easter fell in March this year, but in April last year. This may influence comparisons between the figures for March and the first three months of the year.

Conversion to a new property register

As of 5 November 2007 the municipalities will be transferred in groups from the Ground Parcel, Address and Building Register (GAB) to the new property register, Matrikkelen. All municipalities will be transferred by the end of February 2009. In connection with the conversion there may be some delay in the registration of the municipalities that are being transferred. The Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority has an overview of transfer dates for each municipality .
