Building activity up 10 per cent

During the first half of 2007, a total of 4 614 500 square metres of utility floor space was started. This is a 10.0 per cent increase compared with the first half of 2006.

Most floor space was started for dwellings. A total of 2 032 800 square metres was started for this purpose during the first six months of the year, a 7.4 per cent increase compared with the corresponding period last year. The number of dwellings has increased by 3.7 per cent, and amounted to 16 482 dwellings started during the first half of 2007. In June, 2 709 dwellings were started, 9.1 per cent less than in June last year.

Increase for industrial buildings

A total of 1 898 500 square metres of utility floor space was started for industrial purposes in the first half of the year, a 10.9 per cent increase compared to this period in 2006. The majority of the utility floor space was started for wholesale and retail trade, with 484 300 square metres during the first half of the year. This is a 9.2 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period last year.

During this period, utility floor space started for holiday houses, residential garages and more amounted to 683 300 square metres, an increase of 15.4 per cent compared with the first half of last year.
