Building starts up 8.6 per cent in 2005

The final figures from Statistics Norway`s building statistics shows that building of a total of 8.5 million square metres of utility floor space were started in 2005. This is an increase by 8.6 per cent compared with 2004. The growth is evenly distributed between floor space for dwelling purposes and floor space for other purposes.

A total of 31 608 dwellings were recorded started during 2005, an increase of 5.4 per cent from 2004. These new dwellings amounted to a total of 3.8 million square metres of utility floor space, an increase of 8.6 per cent from 2004.

Over 40 per cent flats in multi-dwelling buildings

13 675 flats in multi-dwelling buildings were recorded started in 2005. This means that over 40 per cent of all dwelling starts in 2005 were flats in multi-dwelling buildings. In Oslo over 80 per cent of all dwelling starts in 2005 were flats in multi-dwelling buildings. In addition, building of 8 623 detached houses, 5 149 dwellings in row houses, linked houses and houses with three or four dwellings and 2 843 dwellings in houses with two dwellings were recorded started in 2005.

Increase in building of new dwellings in Sweden

Preliminary figures from Statistics Sweden shows that a total of 31 100 new dwellings were recorded started in Sweden in 2005, an increase of almost 14 per cent from 2004. The number of started dwellings per 1 000 inhabitants is 3.4 in Sweden against 6.8 in Norway.

Increased building of office and business buildings

A total of 3.3 million square metres of utility floor space for non-residential buildings in 2005, an increase by 10 per cent from 2004. Most building starts were recorded in office and business buildings with 929 000 square metres, up 28.8 per cent from 2004.
