Record high building of new dwellings

31 608 new dwellings were started in Norway in 2005, shows preliminary monthly figures. This is an increase by 7.3 per cent from the year before. 2005 saw the highest number of new dwelling starts since 1982.

The county of Oppland recorded the highest increase in 2005, followed by Finnmark and Buskerud. The number of new dwellings in Oppland increased by 106.9 per cent compared with 2004, while Finnmark and Buskerud saw an increase of 76.9 and 72.4 per cent respectively.

The capital was one of few regions that saw a decrease in building of new dwellings. 3 673 new dwellings was recorded started in Oslo in 2005, a decrease by 38.1 per cent compared with the record high level in 2004.

A total of 3 848 700 square meters of utility floor space for dwellings were started in 2005, an increase of 11.4 per cent compared to 2004.

Also increase for other buildings

4 601 600 square meters of utility floor space were started for other buildings than dwellings in 2005. Of this, 3 267 800 square meters are floor space for industrial buildings and 1 333 800 square meters are floor space for holiday properties and private garages, an increase of 17.6 and 17.2 per cent respectively compared with 2004.

Revised monthly figures for 2005

The monthly figures that were published during 2005 have been too low, and have therefore been revised. This is mainly due to that data from the GAB-register, which is the basis for the building statistics, has been imperfect. In addition there may be corrections in the GAB-register.
