More flats - less detached dwellings

While more flats in blocks were started in the first quarter of 2004 than in the first quarter of 2003, the number of detached dwellings decreased. A similar development was also recorded between 2002 and 2003.

5 865 dwellings were recorded started in the first quarter this year, a decrease of 1.2 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2003. In this period the number of started detached dwellings fell by 5.5 per cent, and the number of flats in blocks rose by 5.9 per cent. An increase was also recorded in the number of new houses with two dwellings and row houses, by 14.5 and 16.7 per cent respectively.

In spite of the increase in the number of started flats in blocks, the utility floor space for this type of dwelling decreased by 11.7 per cent from the first quarter last year. The explanation is that the flats started in the first quarter this year are smaller than those started first quarter last year.

Holiday houses unchanged

84 000 square meters of utility floor space were started for holiday houses the first quarter this year. This is the same as last year.

The utility floor space started for non-residential buildings was almost the same as in first quarter of 2003 as well. Utility floor space was 656 000 square meters, an increase of 0.5 per cent since the corresponding period last year.

Revised figures

In 2001, 2002 and at the beginning of 2003 the recording of non-residential buildings in the municipality of Oslo was imperfect, and previously published figures has been to low. The revised figures for 2001, 2002 and 2003 are now published, and the statistics include all industrial buildings in Oslo.
