Decrease in building activity

From January to September this year 4.4 millions square meters of buildings are started. This is a decrease of 10 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year.

Number of dwellings started. Unadjusted and trend. January 1990-June 2003

During the first nine months this year, almost 16 000 dwellings were started. This is a decrease of 3 per cent compared to same period last year. In Nordland there has been growth in started dwellings on almost 80 per cent. The decrease is strongest in Telemark, where started dwellings are two thirds of the same period last year.

Strongest decrease in industrial buildings

Almost half of the started utility floor space in the first nine months of 2003 is for dwelling purposes. The remaining 2.3 millions square meters of utility floor space are started for other purposes. Holiday properties and private garages are 28 per cent, or 0.65 million square meters, of started utility floor space in non-residential buildings. This category has a decrease of 12.3 per cent compared to the first nine months last year.

Started non-residential utility floor space. Unadjusted and trend. January 1990-June 2003

Other non-residential buildings are industrial buildings. From January to September this year most utility floor space is started for the agriculture and forestry industry, while manufacturing has the second largest portion. The industry group with the strongest decrease is retail trade and repair of personal/household goods. Started utility floor space for this industry decreased with 34 per cent compared to the first nine months last year.

The registration of non-residential buildings in the municipality of Oslo was imperfect for the years 2001, 2002 and the beginning of 2003, subsequently the figures for Oslo so far this year are lower than the actual situation.
