Stable number of new dwellings

During the first eight months 2003 nearly 14 000 dwellings were started - about the same number as in the corresponding period in 2002.

Even if the number of dwellings is stable, the utility floor space in residential buildings decreased by 5.9 per cent compared with August last year. The decrease in floor space may be explained by a predominance of dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings.

Decrease for non-residential buildings

In non-residential buildings 2 million square metres of utility floor space were started during the first eight months this year, a decrease of nearly 15 per cent compared with the same period last year.

In total, 3,8 million square metres of utility floor space were started so far in 2003, 10.8 per cent less than during the first eight months last year.

The registration of non-residential buildings in the municipality of Oslo was imperfect for the years 2001, 2002 and the beginning of 2003, subsequently the figures for Oslo so far this year are lower than the actual situation.
