Building of 2 498 dwellings were started in blocs during the first quarter 2003, an increase of 37 per cent from the 1s t quarter last year. Construction of other types of buildings decreased correspondingly, thus dwelling starts in total were at the same level as in the 1s t quarter of 2002.

From the 1s t quarter of 2002 to the 1s t quarter of 2003 the number of dwelling starts in detached houses decreased by 12 per cent, to 1 731 dwellings. For houses with two dwellings the decrease was 22 per cent.

Utility floor space started in holiday houses decreased by 3 per cent since the 1s t quarter last year.

Less new industrial buildings and warehouses

During the 1s t quarter this year 130 000 square meters of utility floor space were started in industrial buildings and warehouses, 53 per cent less than during the 1s t quarter last year. Utility floor space started in office and business buildings decreased by 34 per cent.

From the 1s t quarter last year to the 1s t quarter this year utility floor space started in hospitals and institutional care buildings increased by 48 per cent.

Registration of non-residential buildings in Oslo is not complete, which means that the figures for Oslo are lower than the actual situation.
