Building of new holiday houses increased

106 000 square metres of utility floor space were started for holiday houses during the 4t h quarter of 2002. During the entire year 402 000 square metres were started, 11 per cent more than in 2001.

2 344 dwellings were started in multi-dwelling buildings in the 4t h quarter of 2002, a increase of 13 per cent from the 4t h quarter of 2001. In total 7 138 dwellings were started in multi-dwelling buildings in 2002, a decrease of 7 per cent compared with 2001. A total of 12 per cent more dwellings were started in undetached houses, linked houses and houses with 3 or 4 dwellings during the 4th quarter of 2002 compared with the corresponding period in 2001.

The number of dwellings in detached houses and houses with two dwellings decreased by 9 and 17 per cent respectively from 2001 to 2002.

More hospitals and institutional care buildings

From 2001 to 2002 utility floor space started in hospitals and institutional care buildings increased by 16 per cent to 314 000 square metres. Started utility floor space in agricultural and fishery buildings and industrial buildings and warehouses increased by 8 and 6 per cent, respectively.

Floor space started in transport and communication buildings decreased the most, from 155 000 square meters to 77 000 square metres.
