Building statistics, Q4 2001

Despite a general decrease in the number of dwelling starts towards the end of 2001, the increase of new multi-dwelling buildings continued in the 4^{t h} quarter of 2001 compared with the 4^{t h} quarter of 2000. The number of dwelling starts in detached houses decreased by 9 per cent in 2001 compared with a year before.

A downturn in holiday house starts

After a long period of growth in the starts of holiday houses, the trend turned down in the 4^{t h} quarter of 2001. In the 4^{t h} quarter floor space started for holiday houses, declined by 16 per cent compared with a high level of starts a year before. The total of floor space starts in 2001 was 4,6 per cent higher than in 2000.
