Increase in dwelling starts

10 195 new dwellings were started from January to May 2001. This is an increase of 17 per cent compared with the same period in 2000. In Akershus there were 1 621 dwelling starts.

Rogaland and Hordaland also had more than 1 000 dwelling starts in the period January-May this year. The number of dwellings starts increased in most counties the first 5 months this year compared with last year. Østfold and Oslo saw the biggest increase with 62 and 49 per cent. Seasonally adjusted monthly series show about the same level in dwelling starts from April to May 2001.

Fewer non-residential buildings

From January to May 2001, 1 444 500 m2 of non-residential utility floor space were started, a decrease of 3,9 per cent compared with the same period of 2000. Construction starts of manufacturing and wholesale and retail trade decreased by 11 and 21 per cent in the first 5 months of 2001 compared with the same period of the previous year. Utility floor space of education increased by 82 per cent.

Construction starts of leisure activity building area and residential garage area increased by 9 per cent in the same period.
