Fewer office, trade and industrial buildings

Construction starts of utility floor space for office, trade and industrial activity in the first quarter of 2001 were 26 per cent lower than in the first quarter of 2000.

Floor space started for non-residential buildings in the first quarter of 2001 fell by 3,5 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2000. Construction starts for office, trade and industrial activity declined the most. Utility floor space for hotel and restaurant activity increased by 70 per cent, compared to same period in 2000.

Construction starts of leisure activity building area and residential garage area, which represents 20 per cent of non residential buildings utility floor space, increased by 17.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2001, compared to the first quarter of 2000.

Residential buildings

Statistics Norway's monthly building statistics show 6 757 dwelling starts in the first quarter of 2001, an increase of 11 per cent compared to the same period in 2000. Seasonally adjusted monthly series show a stable high activity through the first quarter.
