Almost 25 000 dwelling starts in 2000

Statistics Norway's monthly building statistics show 24 688 dwelling starts in 2000. This is 22 per cent more than in 1999. This is the highest number of dwelling starts since 1989.

The Building Statistics is delayed. Preliminary figures for January and February 2001 will be published 23th April 2001.

Most of the dwelling starts in 2000 were in Akershus, which saw a 43 per cent increase with 3 786 dwellings, and Rogaland, which increased 61 per cent with 3 069 dwellings, compared with 1999. Building of houses declined in Østfold, Nordland and Troms. The largest decline was in Nordland, with 27 per cent.

Fewer non-residential buildings in Oslo and Akershus

In Oslo and Akershus, 650 000 m 2 of non-residential utility floor space were started, a decrease of 33 per cent compared with 1999, and the lowest number since 1995 for this region. For Norway in total the non-residential utility floor space started increased 1 per cent in 2000 compared with 1999.
