Increase in dwelling construction

Statistics Norways monthly building statistics show 22 156 dwelling starts in the first 11 months of 2000. This is 22 per cent more than in the same period in 1999.

Most of the dwelling starts in the first 11 months of last year were in Akershus, which saw a 46 per cent increase with 3 307 homes, and Rogaland, which increased 66 per cent with 2 809 homes, compared with the same period in 1999. Housebuilding declined in Østfold, Sør-Trøndelag, Nordland and Troms. The largest decline was in Nordland, with 19 per cent. Over the course of the first 11 months of 2000, 3 124 600 m2 of utility floor space were started. This is an increase of 19 per cent compared with the same period in 1999.

Little growth for non-residential buildings

From January to November last year, 3 597 400 m2 of non-residential utility floor space were started, an increase of 3 per cent from the same period in 1999. Buskerud and Hordaland noted the biggest increases, with 62 and 45 per cent respectively. Construction starts of non-residential utility floor space declined the most in Oslo, with 40 per cent. Construction starts of buildings for education were 18 per cent higher in January to November 2000, compared with the same period in 1999, while construction starts of buildings for hotels and restaurants fell 30 per cent.

Delayed registration of large commercial building in Akershus

A 182 300 m2 building that should have been registered as started in Bærum municipality in October 1999 was not registered until a year later. Due to the buildings large area, Statistics Norway has decided to revise the monthly figures for started non-residential utility floor space for October 1999.
