Most activity in East and West Norway

In 2011, building was started on 27 735 dwellings with 3.8 million square metres of utility floor space for dwellings. New dwellings increased by 31.2 per cent compared with 2010. More than half of the new dwellings were started in the area around Oslo and Rogaland.

Oslo has the highest building activity, with building starts of 4 504 dwellings in 2011, whereof more than 80 per cent are flats. Following Oslo is Rogaland county, with 3 972 new dwellings. Rogaland is the county where most dwellings have been built in detached houses, with 1 060 dwellings, and is also on top in terms of utility floor space for dwellings. The counties of Oslo, Akershus, Rogaland and Hordaland account for more than half of the new dwellings.

Small decrease in industrial sector

In 2011, building was started on 4 million square metres of utility floor space within industrial buildings. This is a decrease of 6.2 per cent compared with the year before. Building starts within office and industrial buildings had 1.4 and 1.1 million square metres of utility floor space respectively. Rogaland is the county with the most building activity within the industrial sector, with about half a million square metres.

Registered building permissions

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
