Stable construction activity

The production in the construction industry decreased by 1.3 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2010 to the first quarter of 2011, after a moderate growth during the previous three quarters, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

Construction, production index. Seasonally adjusted. 1st quarter 2000-1st quarter 2011

The total building activity increased by 0.5 per cent from the preceding quarter and by 2.5 per cent from the corresponding quarter last year.

Civil engineering works decreased by 2.1 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2010 to the first quarter of 2011. Compared with the same period last year, working day adjusted figures show a growth in civil engineering output of 2.9 per cent.

Revised figures

In a quality review of the production index on construction, errors in the calculation procedures were revealed. As a consequence, the index figures dating back to the first quarter of 2008 have been revised. The new figures show a stronger decrease in the first quarter of 2009, and a lower level of activity in 2009 and 2010 than previously published figures.

For international comparisons, go to EUROSTAT (EU).
