Falling activity in construction

The production in construction was 3.1 per cent lower in the fourth quarter of 2008 compared with the third quarter of the same year, according to seasonally adjusted figures. The fall is due to lower activity in the construction of new buildings.

Errors in index figures (13.05.2011)

In a quality review of the production index, construction, errors in the calculation were revealed. As a consequence, the index figures dating back to the first quarter of 2008 have been revised. Text and figures in this article are not revised.

The total construction activity was 0.4 per cent higher in the fourth quarter of 2008 than in the same quarter of the previous year. Production of new buildings went down by 8.0 per cent, while renovation of buildings (improvement, rebuilding, repair and maintenance) increased by 7.8 per cent in the same period. Civil engineering work increased by 8.3 per cent in 2008.

The seasonally adjusted figures show a fall for total construction activity of 3.1 per cent from the third to fourth quarter of 2008.
