Strong rise in construction of new buildings

The production index of new buildings increased by 19.5 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2004 to the fourth quarter of 2005. The repair, maintenance and improvement of buildings decreased by 3.7 per cent in the same period.

The total building activity increased by 8.6 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2005 compared with the fourth quarter of 2004. Adjusted for seasonal variations, the production increased by 3.7 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2005.

Small change in civil engineering

The production in civil engineering works decreased by 0.2 per cent in the fourth quarter compared with the same period last year. Adjusted for seasonal variations, the production level decreased by 4.0

per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2005.

The total production in the construction industry was 6.7 per cent higher in the fourth quarter of 2005 compared with the fourth quarter the year before.

From 2004 to 2005 the yearly index for total production in the construction industry increased by 8.4 per cent. This is based on the average of the quarterly indexes. The partial indexes for the year show an increase in the building activity by 9.9 per cent, while the production in civil engineering increased by 2.9 per cent.
