Solid rise in construction of new buildings

The production index of new buildings increased by 20.7 per cent from the second quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2005. The repair, maintenance and improvement of buildings increased by 8.1 per cent.

The growth is mainly attributable to the three extra working days in the second quarter of this year compared with the second quarter of last year, due to the Easter break.

The total building activity increased by 14.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2005 compared with the second quarter of 2004. Adjusted for seasonal variations, the production increased by 2.9 per cent from the first to the second quarter of 2005.

Small change in civil engineering

Civil engineering works saw production increase by 3.8 per cent in the second quarter compared with the same period last year. Adjusted for seasonal variations, the production level decreased by 1.7 per cent from the first to the second quarter of this year.

The total production in the construction industry was 12.2 per cent higher in the second quarter of 2005 compared with the second quarter of 2004.
