High production in construction

The construction industry saw a strong increase in production during 2004, and the production level was 10.1 per cent higher in the fourth quarter of 2004 than in the corresponding quarter in 2003. Adjusted for seasonal variations, the production increased by 2.4 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2004.

The production of new buildings increased by 12.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2004 compared with the same quarter in 2003. The corresponding growth was 5.9 per cent within renovation of buildings.

High activity levels were also recorded in civil engineering works with an increase in production of 11.8 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2004 compared with the corresponding quarter in 2003. Adjusted for seasonal variations, the growth in this sector was 3.5 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2004.

From 2003 to 2004 the annual index for total production in the construction industry increased by 6.5 per cent. This is based on the average of the quarterly indexes. The partial indexes for the year show an increase in production of new buildings and rehabilitation of buildings of 8.1 and 4.5 per cent respectively. Within civil engineering works the production increased by 10.2 per cent.
