Increased building activity

The production of new buildings increased by 10 per cent from 2000 to 2001. During the same period the production index for building renovation had a decrease of 2.6 per cent. Altogether the building activity rose by 4 per cent from 2000 to 2001.

The highest increase in the new buildings sector happened during the beginning of year 2001. Compared to the same quarters in 2000, the first three quarters of 2001 experienced a rise between 10.7 and 12.7 per cent. However the 4t h quarter of 2001 was down to a 5.9 per cent increase. The index for building renovation was below the level of 2000 during the first three quarters of 2001, although it seemed to be rising during the year. Thus the building renovation activity was 1 per cent higher in the 4t h quarter of 2001, compared with the same quarter of 2000.

Civil engineering sector up from its bottom level

In the 1st quarter of 2001 production in the civil engineering sector was down to a bottom level, from which it rose by the end of the year. Production in the 1s t quarter of 2001 was 15.2 per cent lower than in the 1s t quarter of 2000, while production in the 4t h quarter of 2001 was only 1.9 per cent lower than in the 4t h quarter of 2000. An average for 2001 shows a decrease of 8.3 per cent from 2000.

The whole construction sector had all together an increase of 1.3 percent from 2000 to 2001. The 4t h quarter alone had an increase of 2.4 per cent.

Revised figures back to 2nd quarter of 2000

The indexes back to 2nd quarter of last year are revised. This is because errors were discovered after changing the calculation method.
