13 200 persons naturalised

A total of 13 200 persons were naturalised in 2013; 800 more than the year before. The former Somali, Iraqi and Afghan citizens were the three largest groups to become naturalised in 2013. Slightly more women than men were naturalised. Four out of ten of the new Norwegian citizens were younger than 18 years of age.

The number of naturalisations in 2013 was slightly higher than the year before. Former Somali and Iraqi citizens were the two largest groups, with similar numbers of naturalisations; 1 670 and 1 660 respectively. The third largest group was from Afghanistan, with 1 000 naturalisations.

 Asians account for almost half of all naturalisations

Around 46 per cent of all Norwegian citizenships granted went to Asians. The second largest group was Africans, whose total number of naturalisations accounted for 26 per cent of all naturalisations in 2013. Former European citizens made up 18 per cent of all naturalisations.

Four out of ten younger than 18 years of age

Thirty-seven per cent of all the new citizens were children. Among former Somali citizens, more than half were younger than 18 years old.

About 54 per cent of those who were granted Norwegian citizenship in 2013 were women. The proportion of women was especially high among persons from Philippines, Thailand and Brazil, with eight out of ten women in the group.
