Internal migration activity remains high

In 2011, there were 226 400 migrations between Norwegian municipalities, which corresponds to 46 migrations per 1 000 population. Since 2009, internal migrations between municipalities have increased year by year by 14 200 and 11 700.

The number of migrations within municipalities, which was 427 400, corresponded to 86 migrations per 1 000 inhabitants.

Increase in centralisation

Municipalities in the central areas (code 3) had a migration surplus of 5 900 in-migrations in 2011. Municipalities in the other centrality levels (0-2) had a loss in net migration. There was an increase in the centralisation from 2010, after a decrease from 2006 to 2010.

Most migration among people aged 20-29 years

For more than 20 years there has been slightly more activity in migration among males than females, which was also the case in 2011, with 47 migrations per 1 000 males and 45 migrations per 1 000 females. There were most migrations among people aged 20-29 years. This group represented 34 per cent of all migration between municipalities, and their high mobility is connected to education, work and family establishment.

Norwegian citizens made up 85 per cent of internal migration between municipalities. Polish, followed by Swedish and Lithuanian citizens were the foreign nationals who migrated the most in 2011.

Most internal migration surplus to Akershus and Østfold

There were 6 700 more migrations between counties in 2011 than 2010, with a total of 131 700 migrations. Akershus and Østfold had the greatest migration surplus from other counties. Buskerud and Vestfold also had a considerable surplus, but much less than Akershus and Østfold. In relation to the population, the migration loss was highest in Finnmark, with a net out-migration on 650. This corresponds to a loss of 8.9 per 1 000 population, and is followed by Sogn and Fjordane with an internal net out-migration of 6.3 per 1 000 population.

The loss from Northern Norway as a whole was bigger than in 2010, with a loss of 2 700 to other counties in 2011, and an increase from 2 300 the year before. Møre og Romsdal and Sogn og Fjordane combined had around the same loss as in 2010, and Oslo and Rogaland had a net out-migration on a par with the previous three to four years.
