Still high dividends pay out

Dividend payouts from companies registered with the Norwegian Central Securities Depository (VPS) amounted to NOK 57 billion in the second quarter of 2012. During the same period, the value of the listed shares fell by 8 per cent.

Dividend payouts in the second quarter of 2012, which normally is when Norwegian registered companies pay out dividends, was somewhat lower than last year when dividends totalled NOK 59 billion. The dividend payouts are still significantly higher than in 2009 and 2010, when the payouts totalled NOK 36 billion and NOK 42 billion. The relatively low dividend payouts in these two years can be attributed to the financial crisis and the setback in the world economy.

NOK 54 billion of the dividends where paid out from listed companies. These are enterprises either listed at the Oslo Stock Exchange or Oslo Axxess. Dividend payouts from unlisted companies reached nearly NOK 3 billion in the second quarter.

Dividend payouts

State owned enterprises with high net purchases

As in previous years, state owned enterprises paid out the highest dividends in the second quarter. About half of the dividends on the shares were paid out by state owned enterprises. This sector includes the relatively large enterprises Statoil and Telenor, which were also the two enterprises that paid out the most in dividends. Private enterprises were the second highest payers of dividends, with one third of total dividends. Foreign enterprises, some of which pay out dividends several times a year, paid out NOK 2.5 billion of dividends in the second quarter.

Central government and social security funds largest receiver of dividends

In the second quarter of 2012, central government and social security funds were the largest receiver of dividends. This sector received NOK 23 billion in dividends. In excess of NOK 19 billion of these were paid out by public incorporated enterprises - of which central government and social security funds are a large owner. Foreign investors received NOK 16 billion in dividends in the second quarter, while households received nearly NOK 2 billion.

Listed shares decrease in value

The value of the listed shares fell by NOK 138 billion in the second quarter. The value of the listed shares thereby stood at NOK 1 500 billion at the end of the quarter. Some of the loss in value is due to dividends having been paid out, causing the securities to decrease in value. The most of the loss in value, however, is caused by falling values in the financial markets.

Private non-financial incorporated enterprises with high net purchases of shares

The private non-financial incorporated enterprises net purchased shares issued by public unincorporated enterprises for NOK 16 billion in the second quarter. These high net purchases were caused by Statoil Fuel & Retail being acquisitioned by a Canadian enterprise. The takeover was however made by a Norwegian registered subsidiary of the Canadian enterprise, causing the takeover to be visible as private financial non-financial enterprises purchasing shares issued by public incorporated enterprises. Major sellers of shares in this takeover were foreign enterprises and public incorporated enterprises.

Introduction of new sector classification

A new institutional sector classification was introduced from January 2012. One of the most significant changes was that the line between financial - and non-financial sectors has been shifted such that the financial sectors increased in value. In addition to this, new financial sectors have been added. The introduction of a new sector standard has caused the old tables to stop being updated. New tables have been added that include time series from the first quarter of 2012 and onwards.

See document (in Norwegian) for more information on the new standard and a description of all sectors in the new standard.

New divide between listed and unlisted shares

From first quarter of 2012 listed and unlisted shares will be differentiated from another. Listed shares are here shares listed for trading at the Oslo Stock Exchange and Oslo Axxess.
