The total capital of Norwegian mutual funds went up by 4.3 per cent in the third quarter of the year. This is entirely due to the value increase in fund shares and in particular equity funds, which were up NOK 22.6 billion. The value of bond funds also increased by NOK 8.8 billion at the end of the quarter, while the value of money market funds decreased by NOK 4.2 billion.

Net sales of funds were almost zero

The net sale of funds totalled NOK 65 million in the 3rd quarter of 2013, compared to NOK 1.2 billion in the second quarter. Although the net sales were almost zero in total, there were large differences in the net sales and purchases in the different sectors. For example, life insurance companies net sold funds for NOK 1.4 billion, while private non-financial incorporated enterprises net bought funds for NOK 2.3 billion.

Investors net sold mostly money market funds, worth NOK 4.8 billion in the third quarter of 2013. Net sales of equity funds were NOK 2.7 billion, while net purchase of other bond funds and bond funds were NOK 3.4 billion and NOK 3.2 billion respectively. Since the net sales of hybrid funds were around NOK 1 billion, net sales ended up at almost zero.

Life insurance companies net sold money market funds

The largest owners in the Norwegian mutual funds market; life insurance companies, sold a net amount of NOK 2.8 billion worth of money market funds in the third quarter of 2013. They also sold NOK 1.3 billion worth of equity funds, but net bought NOK 2.0 billion worth of bond funds in the 3rd quarter of 2013.

Households net sold fund shares

As in the previous quarter, the household sector had a net sale of mutual fund shares, which in the 3rd quarter totalled around NOK 665 million. The total value of their fund shares on the other hand went up by NOK 5 billion to NOK 113.5 billion.

Foreign investors net sold in two consecutive quarters

Foreign investors net sold a total of NOK 581 million worth of mutual funds during the third quarter of the year compared to NOK 2.2 billion worth of fund shares in the second quarter.
