Up-turn in the equity funds’ capital

The total value of the Norwegian mutual fund shares went up by NOK 10.3 billion to NOK 526.1 billion at the end of 2011. This happened despite the fact that investors net sold NOK 13.1 billion worth of fund shares during the 4th quarter.

The total value of mutual funds’ capital went up by 2 per cent from the end of the 3rd quarter to the end of the 4th quarter in 2011 and ended up at NOK 526.1 billion. Upward turn in the Norwegian financial market and international financial markets during the 4th quarter contributed to the increase in the equity funds’ capital by 4 per cent. The only type of fund whose value declined was the bond funds that fell by 3.2 per cent.

Investors sold equity funds and bond funds

Equity funds worth NOK 10.2 billion were sold during the 4th quarter of 2011. Net sale of bond funds were NOK 5.1 billion. Investors net bought NOK 2.4 billion worth of money market funds and NOK 0.1 billion worth of hybrid funds. In total, net purchases of mutual funds ended at NOK 13.0 billion.

Life insurance companies sold equity funds

The largest owners in the Norwegian mutual funds market, life insurance companies, sold in net almost NOK 8.0 billion worth of equity funds and NOK 4.5 billion worth of bond funds. Companies in this sector on the other hand, bought money market fund shares worth NOK 4.7 billion and hybrid fund shares worth NOK 0.7 billion. Their net sales therefore were NOK 7.1 billion in total.

Foreign investors invested more

Foreign investors net bought NOK 0.4 billion worth of mutual funds in the 4th quarter of 2011. Most of the purchases were equity funds and bond funds.

Households continued to sell mutual funds’ shares

The household sector’s total net sales of mutual funds ended at NOK 1.9 billion at the end of the 4th quarter of 2011. Households net sold NOK 0.8 billion worth of money market funds and NOK 0.5 billion worth of equity funds and hybrid funds. Net sales in bond funds were minimum; NOK 0.3 billion.

Ownership of life insurance companies declined

At the end of the 4th quarter of 2011, the life insurance companies’ share of the mutual funds decreased to 35.9 per cent of the total, compared to 36.5 per cent of the previous quarter. Households’ owner share was slightly higher and was 22.3 per cent. The foreign investors’ owner share increased from 12.7 to 13.5 per cent.
