Fixed interest rate loans decreases

In the 2n d quarter of 2007 only 11.5 per cent of total loans to the general public were fixed interest loans. This is the lowest share observed since the statistics started 1s t quarter of 2004. The fixed interest loan share was then 20 per cent.

The share of loans with fixed interest rates from state lending institutions to the general public (municipalities, non-financial enterprises and households) have increased slightly the latest quarters, and is now 36 per cent. This is the same as in the first quarter, but 6 percentage points lower than in first quarter in 2004. The largest part of the state lending institutions’ fixed interest loans has fixed interest between one to five years.

Still decreasing fixed interest loan share in banks and mortgage companies.

The fixed interest share of the mortgage companies loans to households has decreased from 39 per cent by the end of 2005, to 9 per cent in 2n d quarter 2007.The fixed interest share of the banks loans to households is reduced from more than 11 per cent in 1s t quarter 2004, to less than 5 per cent in the 2n d quarter 2007.

Households and non-financial enterprises have decreasing shares of fixed interest rate loans

The second quarter figures show a fall in the fixed interest share for loans to households and non financial enterprises. The share of loans with fixed interest rates was 8.2 per cent of total loans to households in 2n d quarter 2007. This is a decline of more than 50 per cent since 1s t quarter 2004.

The share of loans to non-financial enterprises with fixed interest rates fell from 18.6 per cent to 10.6 per cent of total loans in the same period. However, non-financial enterprises may use other types of hedging instruments, for instance interest rate swaps, serving the same purpose as fixed interest rate loans.

Local government sectors have a high share of fixed interest rate loans

After a slump in the share of fixed interest rate loans to local government sectors to barely 40 per cent in the second quarter of 2005, the share of fixed interest rate loans has risen to 48 per cent at the end of the second quarter of 2007.
