Continued growth in lending to the public

Lending to the public by financial institutions increased by 14.4 per cent to NOK 2 770 billion during the last 12 months. Loans with mortgage on dwelling accounted for NOK 1 187 billion. Bank deposits from the public increased by 14.1 per cent to NOK 1 252 billion during the same period.

The strong growth in the overall lending from the financial institutions is mainly due to the high growth in the banks’ lending to the public (municipalities, non-financial corporations and households), which increased by 13.2 per cent to NOK 2 078 billion during the last 12 months. Furthermore, the quarterly growth rate in lending to the public was 2.6 percentage points at the end of fourth quarter.

The value of investments in securities increased by 3.7 per cent to NOK 1 308 billion during the fourth quarter of 2007. However, the twelvemonth growth rate was 2 per cent at the end of the fourth quarter of 2007. The value of investments in equities, units and primary capital certificates has increased by 16.2 per cent, while the value of investments in bonds has been reduced by 6.9 cent since the end of the fourth quarter of 2006.

Moreover, the value of investments in certificates increased by 46.8 per cent during the same period. Bonds still have the largest share of the stock of securities by 60.3 per cent, while equities, units and primary capital certificates account for 34.7 per cent.
