Employment decreased most in Oslo

The number of employed persons working in Oslo decreased by 3.0 per cent, or 12 000 employed persons, from the 4t h quarter 2001 to the 4t h quarter 2002. Vest-Agder had the largest increase by 2.4 per cent, or 1 700 employed persons. For the country as a whole the decrease amounted to 0.4 per cent, or 8 000 employed persons.

The number of employed persons decreased in about 50 per cent of the counties between the 4t h quarter 2001 and the 4t h quarter 2002. With the exception of Akershus, Oslo, Aust-Agder, Vest-Agder and Finnmark, the changes were less than one per cent, according to preliminary figures from the register based employment statistic.

Secondary industry with the largest decrease

All counties with exception of Vest-Agder and Rogaland experienced a decrease in the number of employed persons within the secondary industry, while most counties increased within tertiary (service) industry. The increase was strongest in health-care and parts of business activity-related industry.

Decrease amongst employed persons 25-39 years

For the country as a whole the number of employed persons between 25-39 years decreased by 2.4 per cent, while there was an increase of 5.3 per cent for employed persons above 54 years. All counties except Rogaland and Hordaland had a decrease in the number of employed persons between 20 and 66 years, resident in the county.

Fewer men working more than 30 hours per week

In the 4th quarter 2002 84.8 per cent of the men had settled working hours of 30 hours or more per week, while it was 85,7 per cent in 2001. All counties experienced a decrease in the portion of men with 30 or more settled working hours per week. For women there was an increase from 56.9 per cent to 57.5 per cent with more than 30 settled working hours per week. Oslo, Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder were the only counties with a decrease in the portion of women with more than 30 settled working hours per week.

More employed porsons with higher education

27.3 per cent of the employed persons had a tertiary education in the 4t h quarter 2002. The highest percentage of employed persons with a tertiary education was found among persons resident in Oslo and Akershus, by 42.1 and 31.7 per cent respectively.

Register based employment statistics

During the production of the register based employment statistics for 2002, some improvements have been done in the production process. This affects a small portion of the employees and may in particular affect place of work and industry code for persons in civil services. As a consequence new figures for 2001 have been made.
