Monthly earnings up NOK 1 100

Full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade had average monthly earnings, excluding overtime pay, of NOK 36 200 at 1 September 2011. This is a year-on-year growth of NOK 1 100 or 3.1 per cent.

Wholesale and retail trade includes the industries motor vehicle services, wholesale trade and retail trade. Full-time employees in wholesale trade have the highest monthly wages of these, at an average of NOK 41 300. The corresponding level for full-time employees in motor vehicle services was NOK 34 400, whereas full-time employees in retail trade had NOK 31 300.

Retail trade

Full-time employees in retail trade had a growth in monthly earnings, overtime pay excluded, of NOK 800, or 2.6 per cent. The largest group in retail trade is made up of shop assistants, and their earnings edged up 2.0 per cent, or NOK 500.

Wholesale trade

Full-time employed clerks had a year-on-year rise in earnings of 3.9 per cent, to NOK 31 800. Stores men had earnings of NOK 30 200, going up 4.1. per cent, as opposed to associate professionals and technicians at 5.2 per cent. Sales agents had a climb of NOK 6.5 per cent.

Motor vehicle services

Craftsmen, such as car mechanics and panel beaters, constitute the majority of this industry. Full-time employed craftsmen had average earnings of NOK 31 200, up NOK 1 000 or 3.3 per cent.

Part-time employees

The trade industry employs a large number of part-time workers. Average monthly earnings for this group, calculated to full-time equivalents, were NOK 26 100, a year-on-year escalation of NOK 1 000 or 4.0 per cent.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises covering a total of 100 027 full-time employees and 80 858 part-time employees. According to the Norwegian Central Register of Enterprises and Establishments per September 2011, wholesale and retail trade comprises in total 355 300 employees.

The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included.

Structural changes within the division along with the outcome of collective bargaining would have a certain effect on the wage increase being measured.
