Annual earnings up 4.8 per cent

The estimated average annual earnings for full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade were NOK 310 900. This was NOK 14 300 or 4.8 per cent more than in 2001. The average earnings were highest in wholesale trade.

Lowest increase in motor vehicle services

Annual earnings for full-time employees in motor vehicle services were NOK 285 900, an increase of NOK 9 900 or 3.6 per cent from 2001. For full-time employees in wholesale trade annual earnings increased by NOK 15 300 or 4.6 per cent from the same time the previous year, up to NOK 346 600. By comparison annual earnings for full-time employees in retail trade were NOK 261 800, an increase of NOK 14 200 or 5.7 per cent.

The average annual earnings are estimated by information from wage statistics from at least two years and the quarterly wage index. The quarterly wage index is used to distribute the increase in wages through the year. The annual earnings measure the average earnings for a calendar year. Annual earnings do not include payment for overtime work. The estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the next year have been established.

Average monthly earnings

Average monthly earnings are the main term in Statistics Norways wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic paid salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses, commissions and the like. Payment for overtime work is not included in monthly earnings. The increase in monthly earnings differs somewhat from the increase in annual earnings. Monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while the change in annual earning is from one calendar year to the next. The increase in monthly earnings for full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade was 5.1 per cent, NOK 1 300 from 1 September 2001.

3 per cent increase in motor vehicle services

Full-time employees in motor vehicle services had average monthly earnings of NOK 24 100. This was an increase of NOK 700 or 3 per cent from the same time in 2001.

Trade workers had monthly earnings of NOK 22 000, an increase of NOK 500 or 2.3 per cent. Mechanics make up a large group of the trade workers, with monthly earnings of NOK 22 400. This accounted for an increase of NOK 200 or 1.1 per cent from the previous year. Full-time clerks had average monthly earnings of NOK 22 700, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 5.1 per cent.

4.8 per cent increase in wholesale trade

Full-time employees in wholesale trade had average monthly earnings of NOK 29 400. This was an increase of NOK 1 300 or 4.8 per cent from the same time in 2001.

Full-time clerks, including stock and transport clerks, had monthly earnings of NOK 22 800, an increase of NOK 1 200 or 5.5 per cent. For senior officials and managers average monthly earnings were NOK 41 700, an increase of NOK 900 or 2.2 per cent from the previous year. About one half of the employees in the occupational group technicians and associate professionals were sales representatives, with monthly earnings of NOK 30 500. This was an increase of NOK 300 or 1.1 per cent from 2001. By comparison service workers and market sales workers had average monthly earnings of NOK 23 500, an increase of

NOK 2 300 or 10.8 per cent from the previous year. For full-time professionals average monthly earnings were NOK 37 500, an increase of NOK 2 900 or 8.4 per cent from 2001.

7 per cent increase in retail trade

Full-time employees in retail trade had average monthly earnings of NOK 22 400. This was an increase of NOK 1 500 or 7 per cent from the same time in 2001.

In retail trade service, shop and market sales workers make up a large part of all full-time employees. This occupational group consists for the most part of shop sales persons and other sales persons, with monthly earnings of NOK 19 300. This is an increase of NOK 1 000 or 5.5 per cent from the previous year.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which covers a total of

83 255 full-time and 56 802 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for third quarter 2002, the statistics cover approximately 288 000 employees in wholesale and retail trade.

Due to changes in the reporting system for occupations in 2002 it has not been possible to publish tables on occupation quite similar to those of previous years.
