Monthly earnings increased by NOK 1 200

At 1 September 2001, full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade had average monthly earnings of NOK 25 100. This was NOK 1 200 or 4.9 per cent more than at the same time the year before.

The full-time employees in wholesale trade had average monthly earnings of NOK 28 000. This was an increase of NOK 1 350 or 5 per cent from September 2000. In comparison full-time employees in motor vehicle services had monthly earnings of about NOK 23 400 while full-time employees in retail trade had monthly earnings of NOK 20 900. This corresponded to an increase of 5.8 and 4.3 per cent, respectively, from the year before.

Wholesale trade

Technicians and associated professionals, who are the largest occupational group in wholesale trade, had average monthly earnings of NOK 28 900, an increase of nearly NOK

1 900 or 6.9 per cent from the year before. About one half of the employees in this occupational group are sales representatives, with monthly earnings of NOK 30 200. This was an increase of NOK 1 900 or 6.7 per cent from the year before. Full-time clerks had monthly earnings of NOK 21 600, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 5.2 per cent.

Motor vehicle services

The motor vehicle services industry includes businesses engaged in the sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles and retail sales of automotive fuel. Trade workers had monthly earnings of NOK 21 500, an increase of NOK 900 or 4.3 per cent. Mechanics make up a large group of the trade workers, with monthly earnings of NOK 22 100. This accounted for an increase of NOK 900 or 4.1 per cent from the year before. Full-time service and market sales workers had average monthly earnings of NOK 19 700, an increase of NOK 1 500 or 8.5 per cent.

Retail trade

In retail trade service, shop and market sales workers make up a large part of all full-time employees. Shop and sales clerks, with monthly earnings of NOK 18 300, dominate the occupational group. This is an increase of NOK 500 or 3 per cent. Pharmacy technicians are included in the service and market sales workers group, with average monthly earnings of NOK 19 400. The increase in monthly earnings was NOK 700 or 3.7 per cent from the year before.

Estimated annual earnings increased with 5.4 per cent

Full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade had estimated average annual earnings of NOK 297 000 in 2001, an increase of NOK 15 000 or 5.4 per cent from the year before.

Estimated annual earnings are based on reported wage information as of 1 September each year and include basic paid salary, variable additional allowances as well as bonuses and commissions, etc., but do not include payment for overtime work. Figures from two years of wage statistics are used in the calculations in addition to information from completed wage negotiations. The figures for estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the next year have been established. For more information see "About the statistics".

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises that cover a total of

87 856 full-time employees and 52 475 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for third quarter 2001, the statistics cover around 296 700 employees in wholesale and retail trade.
