Monthly wages increased by NOK 1 300

At 1 September 2000, full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade had average monthly earnings of NOK 23 900. This was NOK 1 300 or 5.9 per cent more than at the same time the year before.

Around half of all full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade are employed in wholesale trade, with average monthly earnings of NOK 26 700. This was an increase of NOK 1 600 or 6.2 per cent from September 1999. Full-time employees in motor vehicle services had monthly earnings of NOK 22 100, which was NOK 1 200 or 5.6 per cent more than the year before. Corresponding figures for full-time employees in retail trade was NOK 20 100, an increase of NOK 1 000 or 5.4 per cent.

NOK 1 600 more in wholesale trade

Wholesale trade employs the most full-time workers in jobs requiring one to three years of higher education (technicians and associated professionals) and clerks. Full-time technicians and associated professionals had average monthly earnings of NOK 27 100, an increase of NOK 1 500 or 5.9 per cent from the year before. Sales representatives are the largest occupational group in this sector, with monthly earnings of NOK 28 300. This was an increase of NOK 1 700 or 6.3 per cent from the year before. Full-time clerks had monthly earnings of NOK 20 500, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 5.5 per cent. This occupational group has the most warehouse and transport workers, with average monthly earnings of NOK 20 300, an increase of NOK 1 000 or 5.0 per cent from the same time the year before.

NOK 1200 more in motor vehicle services

The motor vehicle services industry includes businesses engaged in the sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles and retail sales of automotive fuel. Full-time employees in the industry include many craft and related trade workers, service, shop and market sales workers, and clerks. Trade workers had monthly earnings of NOK 20 600, an increase of NOK 1 400 or 7.3 per cent. Mechanics make up the largest group of trade workers, with monthly earnings of NOK 21 300. This accounted for an increase of NOK 1 500 or 7.7 per cent from the year before. Full-time service, shop and market sales workers had average monthly earnings of NOK 18 200, an increase of NOK 1 300 or 7.7 per cent. The corresponding figure for full-time clerks was NOK 20 700, an increase of NOK 600 or 3.2 per cent.

NOK 1 000 more in retail trade

In retail trade, service, shop and market sales workers make up about 60 per cent of all full-time employees. The occupational group is dominated by shop and sales clerks, with monthly earnings of NOK 17 700. This is an increase of NOK 900 or 5.5 per cent. Pharmacy technicians are included in the service, shop and market sales workers group, with average monthly earnings of NOK 18 700. This is about NOK 1 000 more than the monthly earnings of shop and sales clerks. The increase in monthly earnings for pharmacy technicians was also NOK 900 or 5.0 per cent from the year before.

Estimated annual earnings for full-time employees

On the basis of reported information on earnings at 1 September, a system for estimating annual earnings has been established. Estimated annual earnings includes paid contractual wages, variable additional allowances and bonuses and commissions and the like, but does not include payment for overtime work. The estimated annual earnings is based on the assumption that wages are paid 12 times per year, and covers only full-time employees. Figures from two years of wage statistics are used in the calculations in addition to information from completed wage negotiations. In 2000, all full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade had an estimated annual earnings of NOK 281 300, an increase of NOK 11 600 or 4.3 per cent from the year before.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 83 140 full-time employees and 57 066 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for third quarter 2000, the statistics cover around 320 000 employees in wholesale and retail trade.
