2.9 per cent increase in wages

The average monthly earnings of full-time employees in transport and communication were NOK 28 400 at 1 October 2004. This is an increase of NOK 800 or 2.9 per cent from 2003.

Full-time employees in supporting and auxiliary transport activities and activities of travel agencies had the highest growth in earnings. Their monthly earnings were NOK 28 200 on average, up NOK 1 200 or 4.4 per cent. In comparison, the average monthly earnings of full-time employees in water transport were NOK 31 400, an increase of NOK 500 or 1.7 per cent.

Land transport

The average monthly earnings of employees in land transport were NOK 24 300, an increase of NOK 700 or 3.1 per cent from 2003.

The average monthly earnings of full-time employees in scheduled road transport and other passenger transport were NOK 23 800 at 1 October 2004. This is an increase of NOK 600 or 2.8 per cent. The largest group in scheduled road transport and other passenger transport is drivers. The average monthly earnings in this group were NOK 22 500, an increase of NOK 900 or 3.9 per cent.

For all employees in goods transport, monthly earnings averaged NOK 24 900, a growth of NOK 800 or 3.4 per cent. The average monthly earnings of drivers were NOK 23 800, up NOK 300 or 1.2 per cent.

Post and telecommunications

In transport and communication, post and telecommunications is the largest group in terms of employees. The average monthly earnings of full-time employees in this group were NOK 30 200, an increase of NOK 800 or 2.8 per cent. More than 60 per cent of the employees in post and telecommunications are clerks. Their average monthly earnings were NOK 23 200, an increase of NOK 700 or 3.1 per cent.

Annual earnings up 4.4 per cent

In 2004, the estimated annual earnings of full-time employees in transport and communication were NOK 338 600, up NOK 9 600 or 2.9 per cent from 2003.

The average annual earnings of employees in air transport were NOK 430 200, an increase of NOK 5 200 or 1.2 per cent from 2003. In comparison, employees in land transport had average annual earnings of NOK 289 000. This is an increase of NOK 6 500 or 2.3 per cent.

Estimated annual earnings are calculated by use of information from wage statistics for 2003 and 2004 in addition to information from wage negotiations and the quarterly wage index. The quarterly wage index is used to distribute the increase in wages throughout the year. The estimated annual earnings figures for 2004 are preliminary until wage statistics for 2005 have been established.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises with 73 371 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the third quarter 2004 the statistics cover about 170 800 employees in transport and communication.
