Wages in manufacturing up 1.7 per cent

The quarterly wage index for full-time employees in manufacturing shows a 1.7 per cent increase in basic monthly salaries from the first to the second quarter of 2008. In the second quarter of 2007 the corresponding figure was 0.9 per cent.

In wholesale and retail trade and in hotels and restaurants the wage indices for basic salaries show an increase from the first to second quarter of 2008 of 1.5 and 1.4 per cent, respectively.

The wage index for average monthly earnings in manufacturing increased by 0.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2008. In the corresponding quarter of 2007 the increase was 0.5 per cent.

The wage indices for average monthly earnings in wholesale and retail trade and in hotels and restaurants increased by 1.1 and 1.8 per cent, respectively, from the first to the second quarter of 2008.

Average monthly earnings include basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses but excluding overtime pay.
