Wages in manufacturing slightly up

The quarterly wage index for full-time employees in the manufacturing industry shows a 1.7 per cent increase in monthly earnings from the second quarter of 2004 to the third quarter 2004.

The increase in monthly earnings for employees in the wholesale and retail trade was 0.6 per cent from the 2nd quarter 2004 to the 3rd quarter 2004. The corresponding growth for employees in the real estate and business was 1.1 per cent in the same period. Employees in transport and communication had a 1.3 per cent reduction in their monthly earnings, while the employees in construction industry had a 0.6 per cent reduction in their monthly earnings. The growth for employees in electricity supply was 4.0 per cent. Employees in hotels and restaurants had an increase of 0.8 per cent, while the employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had a 1.4 per cent decrease in their monthly earnings.

Change over a year

Employees in the construction industry had a 3.0 per cent growth in monthly earnings from the 3rd quarter 2003 to the 3rd quarter of 2004. The corresponding growth for employees in electricity supply and in the manufacturing industry was 7.5 per cent and 4.6 per cent respectively, while the increase for employees in transport and communication was 2.9 per cent. Wholesale and retail trade, monthly earnings for employees in the same period increased by 4.0 per cent. Employees in real estate and business activities had a growth in monthly earnings of 2.3 per cent. The corresponding growth for employees in oil and gas extraction and mining was 2.4 per cent.

Sample

The sample for the 3rd quarter of 2004 includes approximately 242 700 full-time employees, broken down into 77 000 in manufacturing, 21 400 in construction, 53 000 in transport and communication, 33 400 in wholesale and retail trade, 33 300 in real estate and business activities, 4 000 in hotels and restaurants, 17 400 in oil and gas extraction and mining and 3 200 in electricity supply. By comparison, the preliminary figures in the national accounts for the 2nd quarter of 2004 show that about 26 200 persons are employed in oil and gas extraction and mining, 262 400 in manufacturing, 114 700 in construction, 148 300 in transport and communication, 315 800 in wholesale and retail trade, 210 400 in real estate and business activities, 63 600 in hotels and restaurants and 14 800 in electricity supply. The figures from the national accounts also include part-time employees.
