Wages in manufacturing up 1.5 per cent

The quarterly wage index for full-time employees in the manufacturing industry shows a 1.5 per cent increase in monthly earnings from the 4th quarter 2003 to the 1st quarter 2004.

The increase in monthly earnings for employees in transport and communication was 1.8 per cent from the 4th quarter 2003 to the 1st quarter 2004. The corresponding growth for employees in the construction industry was 0.4 per cent in the same period. Employees in wholesale and retail trade received an increase of 1.2 per cent in their monthly earnings from the 4th quarter 2003 to the 1st quarter 2004. For employees in hotels and restaurants the growth was unchanged from the 4 quarter 2003. The growth for employees in real estate and business activities was 0.5 per cent. Employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had an increase of 5.4 per cent, while the employees in electricity supply had a 2.6 per cent increase in their monthly earnings from 4th quarter 2003 to the 1st quarter 2004.

Change over a year

Employees in the construction industry had a 3.2 per cent growth in monthly earnings from the 1st quarter 2003 to the 1st quarter of 2004. The corresponding growth for employees in electricity supply and in the manufacturing industry was 8.6 per cent and 4.6 per cent, while the increase for employees in transport and communication was 3.4 per cent. Wholesale and retail trade, monthly earnings for employees in the same period increased by 3.8 per cent. Employees in real estate and business activities had a growth in monthly earnings of 3.9 per cent from the 1st quarter 2003 to the 1st quarter of 2004. The corresponding growth for employees in oil and gas extraction and mining was 1.3 per cent.

Sample

The sample for the 1st quarter of 2004 includes approximately 255 300 full-time employees, broken down into 80 400 in manufacturing, 24 400 in construction, 54 200 in transport and communication, 36 400 in wholesale and retail trade, 33 400 in real estate and business activities, 4 900 in hotels and restaurants, 18 600 in oil and gas extraction and mining and 3 000 in electricity supply. By comparison, the preliminary figures in the national accounts for the 3rd quarter of 2003 show that about 26 500 persons are employed in oil and gas extraction and mining, 266 100 in manufacturing, 112 100 in construction, 150 900 in transport and communication, 311 700 in wholesale and retail trade, 202 200 in real estate and business activities, 60 800 in hotels and restaurants and 14 600 in electricity supply. The figures from the national accounts also include part-time employees.
