Wages in manufacturing up 1.7 per cent

The quarterly wage index for full-time employees in the manufacturing industry shows a 1.7 per cent increase in monthly earnings from the 2nd quarter to the 3rd quarter this year. The increase from the 3rd quarter 2002 to the 3rd quarter 2003 was 4.2 per cent.

The increase in monthly earnings for employees in transport and communication was 0.5 per cent from the 2nd quarter 2003 to the 3rd quarter 2003. The corresponding growth for employees in hotels and restaurants was 0.5 per cent in the same period. Employees in wholesale and retail trade received an increase of 0.7 per cent in their monthly earnings from the 2nd to the 3rd quarter this year. Employees in electricity supply had a growth of 2.9 per cent, while the corresponding growth for employees in real estate and business activities was 0.9 per cent. Employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had a 3.0 per cent reduction in their monthly earnings, while the employees in the construction industry had a 0.4 per cent reduction.

Income growth

Employees in the construction industry had a 2.9 per cent growth in monthly earnings from the 3rd quarter 2002 to the 3rd quarter of 2003. The corresponding growth for employees in electricity supply was 5.3 per cent, while the increase for employees in transport and communication was 3.9 per cent. Wholesale and retail trade, monthly earnings for employees in the same period increased by 3.5 percent. Employees in real estate and business activities had a growth in monthly earnings of 3.3 per cent from the 3rd quarter last year to the 3rd quarter this year. The corresponding growth for employees in oil and gas extraction and mining was 4.6 per cent.

Sample

The sample for the 3rd quarter of 2003 includes approximately 232 100 full-time employees, broken down into 72 900 in manufacturing, 27 200 in construction, 50 900 in transport and communication, 26 800 in wholesale and retail trade, 30 500 in real estate and business activities, 4 400 in hotels and restaurants, 16 500 in oil and gas extraction and mining and 2 900 in electricity supply. By comparison, the preliminary figures in the national accounts for the 2nd quarter of 2003 show that about 26 900 persons are employed in oil and gas extraction and mining, 273 400 in manufacturing, 111 700 in construction, 164 100 in transport and communication, 315 000 in wholesale and retail trade, 211 200 in real estate and business activities, 64 500 in hotels and restaurants and 14 900 in electricity supply. The figures from the national accounts also include part-time employees.
