Manufacturing wages up 0.4 per cent

Monthly earnings for full-time employees in the manufacturing industry increased by 0.4 per from the 3rd to the 4th quarter of 2002. The increase from the 4th quarter of 2001 to the corresponding quarter last year was 5.2 per cent.

The increase in monthly earnings for employees in the construction industry was 2.6 per cent from the 3rd to the 4th quarter of 2002. The corresponding growth for employees in transport and communication was 1.0 per cent. Employees in wholesale and retail trade received a 1.7 increase in their monthly earnings in the same period, the employees in electricity supply a growth of 1.4 per cent, while the corresponding growth for employees in real estate and business activities was 1.2 per cent. Employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had a 2.2 per cent increase in their monthly earnings from the 3rd to the 4th quarter of 2002.

Change over a year

Employees in the construction industry had a 5.9 per cent growth in monthly earnings from the 4th quarter of 2001 to the 4th quarter of 2002. The corresponding growth for employees in oil and gas extraction and mining was 4.8 per cent, employees in electricity supply had a growth of 6.4 per cent, while employees in transport and communication had a growth of 5.8 per cent. Employees in wholesale and retail trade had an increase of 4.4 per cent in the same period, while those in real estate and business activities had a growth of 5.1 per cent.

Sample

The sample for the 4th quarter of 2002 includes approximately 176 300 full-time employees, broken down into 12 200 in oil and gas extraction and mining, 66 800 in manufacturing, 20 900 in construction, 26 300 in transport and communication, 24 400 in wholesale and retail trade, 24 400 in real estate and business activities and 1 300 in electricity supply. By comparison, the preliminary figures in the national accounts for the 1st quarter of 2002 show that about 26 000 persons are employed in oil and gas extraction and mining, 288 000 in manufacturing, 110 000 in construction, 117 000 in transport and communication, 304 000 in wholesale and retail trade, 209 000 in real estate and business activities and 15 000 in electricity supply. The figures from the national accounts also include part-time employees.
