0.8 per cent wage growth in manufacturing

The quarterly wage index for full-time employees in the manufacturing industry shows a 0.8 per cent increase in monthly earnings from the 1st quarter 2001 to the 2nd quarter 2001. The increase from 2nd quarter 2000 to 2nd quarter 2001 was 4.4 per cent.

The increase in monthly earnings for employees in the construction industry was 0.9 per cent from the 1st quarter 2001 to the 2nd quarter 2001. The corresponding growth for employees in transport, storage and communication was 1.1 per cent in the same period. Employees in trade and repair received a 1.4 increase in their monthly earnings from the 1st quarter 2001 to the 2nd quarter 2001, while the corresponding growth for employees in real estate and business activities was 1.0 per cent in the same period.

Change over a year

Employees in manufacturing had a 4.4 per cent growth in monthly earnings from the 2nd quarter 2000 to the 2nd quarter 2001. The corresponding growth for employees in oil and gas extraction and mining was 7.1 per cent, while employees in transport, storage and communication had a growth of 5.7 per cent. Employees in the construction industry had an increase of 4.7 per cent, employees in trade and repair had an increase of 4.6 per cent in the same period, while those in real estate and business activities had a growth of 4.6 per cent from the 2nd quarter 2000 to the 2nd quarter 2001.

Sample

The sample for the 2nd quarter of 2001 includes approx. 120 100 full-time employees, broken down into 13 000 in oil and gas extraction and mining, 47 900 in manufacturing, 18 900 in construction, 12 300 in transport, storage and communication, 11 700 in trade and repair and 16 300 in real estate and business activities. By comparison, the preliminary figures in the national accounts for the 2nd quarter of 2001 show that there are about 23 000 persons employed in oil and gas extraction and mining, 292 000 in manufacturing, 114 000 in construction, 123 000 in transport, storage and communication, 321 000 in trade and repair and 169 000 in real estate and business activities. The figures from the national accounts also include part-time employees.
