1.9 per cent wage growth in manufacturing

The quarterly wage index for full-time employees in the manufacturing industry shows a 1.9 per cent increase in monthly earnings from the 3rd to the 4th quarter 2000. The increase from 4th quarter 1999 to 4th quarter 2000 was 4.2 per cent, which is the same as from 3rd quarter 1999 to 3rd quarter 2000.

The increase in monthly earnings for employees in the construction industry was 2.8 per cent from the 3rd quarter 2000 to the 4th quarter 2000. The corresponding growth for employees in oil and gas extraction and mining was 2.7 per cent and for employees in transport, storage and communication it was 1.6 per cent in the same period. Employees in trade and repair and employees in real estate and business activities received a 1.0 increase in their monthly earnings from the 3rd quarter 2000 to the 4th quarter 2000.

Change over a year

Employees in manufacturing had a 4.2 per cent growth in monthly earnings from the 4th quarter 1999 to the 4th quarter 2000. The corresponding growth for employees in oil and gas extraction and mining was 6.0 per cent, while employees in transport, storage and communication had a growth of 4.9 per cent. Employees in the construction industry and employees in trade and repair had an increase of 4.5 per cent in the same period, while those in real estate and business activities had a growth of 4.1 per cent from the 4th quarter 1999 to the 4th quarter 2000.

Sample

The sample for the 4th quarter of 2000 includes approx. 109 100 full-time employees, broken down into 12 300 in oil and gas extraction and mining, 36 100 in manufacturing, 19 800 in construction, 14 500 in transport, storage and communication, 12 500 in trade and repair and 13 900 in real estate and business activities. By comparison, the preliminary figures in the national accounts for the 4th quarter of 2000 show that there are about 24 600 persons employed in oil and gas extraction and mining, 290 600 in manufacturing, 105 000 in construction, 121 000 in transport, storage and communication, 322 000 in trade and repair and 162 000 in real estate and business activities. The figures from the national accounts also include part-time employees.
