Low increase in wages

The average monthly earnings of full-time employees in manufacturing were NOK 27 900 per 1 October 2004. This is an increase of NOK 1 000, or 3.6 per cent, from 2003. The estimated annual earnings of full-time employees in manufacturing were NOK 331 700 in 2004, a growth of 3.7 per cent from 2003, the lowest increase in wages in several years.

Of all the manufacturing industries, manufacturing of machinery and equipment and manufacturing of food products, beverages and tobacco are the two largest groups in terms of employees. The average monthly earnings of full-time employees in manufacturing of machinery and equipment were NOK 28 900. This constitutes an increase of NOK 700, or 2.6 per cent. In comparison, full-time employees in manufacturing of food products, beverages and tobacco had average monthly earnings of NOK 25 200, a growth of NOK 1 200, or 4.8 per cent, from the previous year.

Women earn less than men

The average monthly earnings of women employed in manufacturing were NOK 3 300 or about 12 per cent lower than for men per 1 October 2004. Only about 20 per cent of the full-time employees in manufacturing are women, and most of them are employed in manufacturing of machinery and equipment and manufacturing of food products, beverages and tobacco. In addition, more than 50 per cent of the women work as machine operators, clerks, market sales workers and service workers, i.e. occupational groups with relatively low wages.

Annual earnings

In 2004, the estimated annual earnings of full-time employees in manufacturing were NOK 331 700, up NOK 11 800, or 3.7 per cent, from 2003. This is the lowest growth in several years. In comparison, the growth was NOK 13 700, or 4.5 per cent, from 2002 to 2003.

There are major differences in estimated annual earnings between sectors. The estimated annual earnings of full-time employees in manufacturing of machinery and equipment were NOK 343 700 in 2004, which is equivalent to a growth of NOK 10 100, or 3.0 per cent, from 2003. In comparison, full-time employees in manufacturing of food products, beverages and tobacco had average annual earnings of NOK 297 400, an increase of NOK 11 700 or 4.1 per cent.

The average annual earnings are estimated by use of information from wage statistics from at least two years and the quarterly wage index. Annual earnings do not include payment for overtime work. The estimated annual earnings figures for 2004 are preliminary until wage statistics for 2005 have been established.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which covers a total of

134 294 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for the third quarter of 2004, the manufacturing industries have approximately 260 800 employees in total.

Total monthly earnings are the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Total monthly earnings cover basic paid salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses, commissions and the like. Overtime pay is not included in total monthly earnings.
