Annual earnings increased by 4.4 per cent

Estimated annual earnings for employees in manufacturing were NOK 319 600 in 2003, an increase of NOK 13 400 or 4.4 per cent from 2003.

Average annual earnings are estimated using information from wage statistics from at least two years and the quarterly wage index. The figures are estimates for full-time employees and do not include payment for overtime work. Estimated annual earnings for 2003 are preliminary until wage statistics for 2004 are in place.

There are major differences in estimated annual earnings between industries. Estimated annual earnings for employees in manufacturing of basic chemicals were NOK 382 700 in 2003, up NOK 20 200 or 5.6 per cent from 2002. In comparison, employees in manufacturing of textiles and wearing apparel had average annual earnings of NOK 270 100, an increase of NOK 11 300 or 4.4 per cent.

Total monthly earnings increased by NOK 1 000

Total monthly earnings is the main category in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Total monthly earnings cover basic paid salaries, additional allowances and bonuses, commissions etc. Overtime pay is not included in total monthly earnings. Total monthly earnings for full-time employees in manufacturing were NOK 27 000 in 2003, up NOK 1 000 or 3.7 per cent from 2002. Employees in manufacturing of machinery and equipment had total monthly earnings of NOK 28 100, an increase of NOK 900 or 3.2 per cent. In comparison, employees in manufacturing of food products, beverages and tobacco had total monthly earnings of NOK 24 000, a growth of NOK 700 or 2.8 per cent from the previous year.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises covering 133 772 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for the third quarter of 2003, the statistics cover approximately 270 800 employees in manufacturing.

Due to changes in the reporting system for occupations in 2002 it is not possible to compare occupational groups with years before 2002.
