Monthly earnings increased by NOK 900

Full-time employees in manufacturing had NOK 23 400 in average monthly earnings as of 1 October 2000. This was NOK 900 more than at the same time the year before, or an increase of 4.2 per cent.

Manufacturing covers many different industries, with most full-time employees being found in the machinery and equipment industry and the food products, beverages and tobacco industry. The average monthly earnings in these industries were NOK 24 300 and NOK 20 900, respectively, an increase of 4.4 and 4 per cent from the same time the year before.

Highest wage

Full-time employees in oil refining and production of basic chemicals had the highest average monthly earnings, with NOK 29 300 and NOK 27 600 respectively. This was an increase of NOK 700 and NOK 1 100 from the year before or 2.6 and 4.3 per cent. Employees in publishing and printing had corresponding monthly earnings of NOK 26 400, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 4.4 per cent.

Lowest wage

Full-time employees in textiles and textile products and in wood and wood products had the lowest average monthly earnings of NOK 19 900 and NOK 20 000, respectively, an increase of 4.3 and 4.2 per cent from the year before. Employees in the manufacturing of furniture had NOK 20 800 in monthly earnings, an increase of NOK 800, or 4.1 per cent, from the year before.

Machine operators and drivers

Machine operators and drivers clearly made up the largest occupational group among full-time employees in manufacturing. They had NOK 20 700 in average monthly earnings, an increase of NOK 800 or 4 per cent from the same time the year before. While machine operators and drivers had NOK 21 000 in monthly earnings in the machinery and equipment industry, the corresponding earnings for this occupational group in the food products, beverages and tobacco industry were NOK 19 400. That makes an increase of NOK 1 000 and NOK 600, or 4.9 and 3.1 per cent, respectively.

In manufacturing we also find relatively many full-time employees in crafts and related trades, an occupational group which had NOK 21 300 in average monthly earnings, an increase of NOK 800 or 3.9 per cent from the year before. Crafts and related trade workers in the machinery and equipment industry and the food products, beverages and tobacco industry had approx. the same monthly earnings: NOK 21 400 and NOK 21 100, respectively. This corresponds to an increase of 3.4 and 5.2 per cent from the year before.

Other occupational groups

Senior officials and managers in manufacturing had NOK 39 000 in monthly earnings, an increase of NOK 2 200 or 6 per cent from the year before. Professionals had NOK 31 300, an increase of NOK 1 500 or 5.1 per cent, while technicians and associated professionals had NOK 27 000, up NOK 1 000 or 3.7 per cent from the same time the year before. Full-time clerks, service workers and market sales workers had NOK 22 200 in monthly earnings, up NOK 800 or 3.8 per cent from the year before.

In the machinery and equipment industry, senior officials and managers had NOK 40 500 in monthly earnings, an increase of NOK 2 500 or 6.5 per cent. The same occupational group in the food products, beverages and tobacco industry had NOK 35 800, up NOK 2 600 or 7.7 per cent from October 1999 to October 2000.

Estimated annual salary for full-time employees

Based on reported information as of 1 October, a calculation arrangement has been established for annual salary. Estimated annual salary includes basic paid agreed salary, irregular payments, bonuses, commissions, etc., but does not include payment for overtime. The estimated annual salary is based on there being paid salary 12 times per year, and includes only full-time employees. The calculations are based on information from the quarterly wage index and two years wage statistics for employees in manufacturing as of October, as well as information from completed wage negotiations. The figures for estimated annual salary for this year are preliminary until statistics for a new year are established. For more information on estimated annual salary, see "About the statistics."

In year 2000, all full-time employees in manufacturing had an estimated annual salary of NOK 276 700, an increase of NOK 10 700 or 4 per cent from the year before.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 126 567 full-time and 11 324 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for the 3rd quarter of 2000 the statistics cover approx. 298 000 employed wage earners in manufacturing.
