Monthly earnings increased by NOK 1000

Full-time employees in hotels and restaurants had average monthly earnings, excluding over-time payments, of NOK 24 800 by 1 October 2007. This was an increase of approximately NOK 1 000 or 4.5 per cent from the same time the year before.

The earnings vary from an average of about NOK 23 900 for full-time employees in restaurants and bars to NOK 27 300 for employees in canteens and catering. This indicates a growth from 2006 of 3.4 and 6.6 per cent, respectively. In comparison, the monthly earnings of full-time employees in hotels were NOK 25 000, NOK 1 200 or 4.8 per cent more than in 2006.

On the statistical basis

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises with 14 545 full-time employees. According to figures from the national accounts for the third quarter of 2007, the statistics cover about 73 000 employees in hotels and restaurants.

The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included.

Estimations of earnings

The average annual earnings are estimated by use of information from wage statistics from at least two years and the quarterly wage index. The increase in annual earnings differs somewhat from the increase in monthly earnings. Monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while the change in annual earnings is from one calendar year to the next. Annual earnings do not include payment for overtime work.
