Monthly earnings increased by NOK 1 100

The monthly earnings for full-time employees in hotels and restaurants were NOK 20 900 1 October 2002. This is an increase of NOK 1 100 or 5.4 per cent from 1 October 2001.

Close to half of all full-time employees in this industry work in hotels and other provision and short-stay accommodations. On average heir monthly earnings were NOK 20 900, which are an increase of NOK 1 200 or 6.2 per cent from 1 October 2001.

Full-time employees in restaurants and bars averaged f NOK 20 400 per month, an increase of NOK 800 or 4.2 per cent.

In comparison, full-time employees in canteens and catering had monthly earnings of NOK 22 300, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 5.1 per cent.

Hotels, camping sites and other provision and short-stay accommodations

Service workers make out the largest employment group in this category. On average, monthly earnings of this group were NOK 20 000, an increase of NOK 900 or 4.9 per cent from 2001.

Cooks had monthly earnings of NOK 20 500, while headwaiters, waiters, waitresses and bartenders had monthly earnings of NOK 19 000. This corresponds to an increase of 4.9 and 3.4 per cent, respectively. Receptionists had monthly earnings of NOK 20 100, and cleaners had NOK 17 800.

Restaurants and bars

About sixty per cent of all employees in restaurants and bars are service workers. Their average monthly earnings were NOK 19 200, an increase of NOK 800 or 2.6 per cent.

In this category headwaiters, waiters, waitresses and bartenders had NOK 18 600. Cooks had

NOK 20 200, while cleaners in restaurants and bars had NOK 18 000.

Canteens and catering

Service workers in this category had monthly earnings of NOK 21 900. This is an increase of NOK 700 or 3.4 per cent from 1 October 2001.

Cleaners had monthly earnings of NOK 19 700.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises counting 15 135 full-time employees and 19 068 part-time workers. According to figures from the National Accounts for the third quarter 2002, the statistics cover about 65 600 employees.
