Monthly earnings up 5.9 per cent in construction

Average monthly earnings, excluding overtime payment, for all full-time employees in building and construction industry were NOK 32 800 at 1 October 2008, an increase of NOK 1 800 or 5.9 per cent from 1 October 2007.

The basic salary, defined as monthly earnings excluding bonuses and irregular payments, was NOK 31 300 on average. This is an increase of NOK 1 800 or 5.8 per cent.

Craft workers

Craft workers, the largest group of employees in constructions, include numerous craft working professions. Electricians, one of the largest subgroups of craft workers, had average monthly earnings of NOK 30 500, a year-on-year increase of 6 per cent. Another subgroup with a fairly large number of employees is woodworkers and cabinet-makers. They received an average monthly earnings of NOK 29 000, which constitutes a year-on-year growth of 5.6 per cent. Road workers, another large subgroup, had a year-on-year increase of 3.7 per cent.

Engineers and senior officials and managers

Technicians and associate professionals, which include engineers, had average monthly earnings of NOK 40 600, a year-on-year increase of 7.8 per cent. Senior officials and managers with average monthly earnings of NOK 49 800 achieved an increase of 8.9 per cent.

Underlying wage increase

Structural changes, as well as results from the wage negotiations, will influence the recorded changes in earnings. Among other factors this include changes in the employment pattern, working time and profession. The development of average earnings is also influenced by the wage increase and the number of employees who join and leave the work force in the particular group of industry or switch to other industries. In this case it can be rather informative to look at the underlying wage increase, or the increase in wages for identical full-time employees in the same profession and same enterprise two years in a row. In construction we found that the estimated underlying wage increase was at 9.4 per cent.

Estimated annual earnings

Average estimated earnings of full-time employees in the building and construction industry in 2008 were estimated to be NOK 385 300, a 5.8 per cent increase from 2007. Estimated annual earnings are based on salaries 12 months a year, and holiday pay allowance is not included. Annual earnings cover basic salary, variable additional allowances and bonuses, but do not include overtime pay. For the calculation, information from two years of wage statistics are used as well as information from the wage negotiations. Estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the next year have been established.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises covering a total of 56 665 full-time employees and 2 414 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the 3rd quarter of 2008, the statistics cover approximately 170 200 employees in building and construction industry. The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included, but is present in the statistics separately.
